What was Singapore like before 1819?

Key Point 1: People were relatively rich.

Source 1Description: The picture above shows shards of broken pieces of greenware, these greenware were mostly made in China, Longquan Zhejiang. These might have something to do with trading in Singapore as Greenwares are mostly only made in China and only can be found in Singapore if a Chinese trader had brought it to Singapore.


Key points:
These many pieces of the greenware shows the huge amount of trade in the past as these greenwares must have been brought over by Chinese traders to trade thus showing that live was easy as there were many trading opportunities

Description: These China coins are found in Singapore and they were used for trading purporses as they are a form of money. They were used mostly during the the 12th century.

Key points:
These coins tell us that coins and money were oftenly used before 1819 and therefore we can deduce that people were quite rich and it means that life was quite easy as there were not much hardship.

Description: The picture shown above is the glassbeads. The glassbeads are in the National Musuem and were made in the 14th century, in China.

Key points:
The glass sheds were made in China and its means that we might have lots of trading with China and therefore people were quite rich in the past as people had lots of trading connections to earn money.








Key Point 2: Advanced and well-developed

Description: This is the Singapore stone. This was found at the Singapore river and is known as “Long Yamen” too. It was though blasted and remove and this is a fragment of the stone.

Key Point: The stone have carvings written in a writing system that no one can understand till today. This proves that Singapore was advanced and well-developed at that time as people already knew how to read, write and carve words onto the stone while not many knew how to during that time.


Key Point 3:Singapore had a monarchy that control was not so good in the past

Description: The picture above describes a set of gold ornaments. The gold ornaments were made in the 14th century, Java. This might have belonged to a royal who controlled us as gold was expensive that only royals could afford at that time.

Key points: The gold ornaments might have belonged to a ruler who did not control us that good as if the control was good, the control and presence of a royal might have still been present now.
